In the mood for something sweet? You’ve come to the right place.
After a satisfying brunch a few blocks away, my crew and I were on a mission for a midday treat. The sun was out during what was predicted to be a pretty cloudy day. The temperature was perfect for walking and all the calories we were about to consume. We were on the hunt to find dessert in Williamsburg that is known for drawing a crowd.
Martha’s Country Bakery is hard to miss on the corner of Bedford Avenue and N 1st Street. In true foodie fashion I started making decisions about my meal based on the rows of cakes displayed in the front window. This location is pretty big so if you want to stay and dine there is plenty of seating available. Other patrons went straight to the cashier to pick up orders that were already placed and some made their purchase in real time.
Martha’s Country Bakery is a true dessert paradise. They have a few locations in New York City, but as far as desserts go it is some of the best dessert in Williamsburg. Upon arrival, one of the first things I noticed was the sheer number of options to choose from. The menu is long for a reason. There’s cakes, pies, cupcakes, cookies, muffins, ice cream – you name it and they probably have it.
My group had the items pictured here. Everything we had was worth the calories it came with! Here are a few thoughts about each of the items:
(Top Left) Peanut Butter Cookie: This made me a believer in the power of warm cookies. You really get to experience the moisture and all of the flavors in the cookie. I like peanut butter in general, but this was a great cookie.
(Top Right) Seven Layer Cake Cake Slice: While 7 layers of anything can sound like a challenge the cake itself was light and neatly layered with chocolate.
(Bottom Left) Chocolate Cake and Vanilla Ice Cream: I really enjoyed the side by side pairing because I got to enjoy the warm cake with the cool ice cream in every bite. The cake was densely packed with chocolate but not as moist as I would have liked.
(Bottom Right) Banana Cream Pie Slice: This was my favorite dessert from our visit. The pie was decadent and creamy. The icing on the very top was a bit too sweet for my liking but the crust on the bottom was perfect. I did not ask about the contents of the crust, but it tasted like a graham cracker crust.
So maybe I’m a bit obsessed with graham cracker crusts at this point. I recently had a dessert at an another restaurant with an amazing crust. I have a thing for a good crust on a dessert.
Back to Martha’s Country Bakery, overall it was a great experience. It is a great place to visit if you are looking to try dessert in Williamsburg. The desserts are big and perfect for sharing. As mentioned, I was with a group but I would definitely return solo. This location doesn’t quite have the intimacy of your local cafe, as it can get pretty busy throughout the day. I did enjoy how responsive the staff was and thoughtful with suggestions they were. Cake slices are about $8 each. Cookies are about $5. Other sweet treats range from about $5-$20. These prices may be different if you are ordering online for delivery.
I am already looking forward to my next visit.
Live abundantly,
Bethany
