3 Easy Items To Get Rid Of During Your Next Closet Purge

It’s incredible how transformative a clean and organized closet can be. With the end of the year quickly approaching, it is an ideal time to get your closet in the best shape possible.

See ahead for the three types of items you should get rid of during your next closet purge.

1. Clothes that no longer fit your body

I am a huge advocate for having clothes in your closet that make you feel your best. One approach is to wear clothes that maximize the fit you feel most comfortable in. Whether you like a loose or a snug fit, prioritize the clothing that aligns with your preferences. This goes for your shoes as well. Don’t hold on to those heels that are killing your feet in the name of style. Most days, you will probably avoid wearing those shoes anyway. While those shoes go unworn, they will continue to take up space in your closet. By removing items that don’t fit, it will reduce the amount of time you spend agonizing over what to wear and feeling frustrated by the lack of options.

2. Clothes that do not fit your lifestyle

Of course, it makes sense to save items in your closet for a special occasion. However, it is important to have a closet that aligns with your current lifestyle. Maybe you purchased items for a life you used to have or for a life you are hoping to have. You could have dressed one way for a job you had years ago, but now you are realizing that those clothes do not match the person you are now. Additionally, you might be purchasing clothes with the hope of creating new experiences. Either way, you aren’t wearing these clothes now. These items are taking up space in your closet and holding you back from enjoying the moments you could be creating right now.

3. Clothes that are beyond repair

I will spare you the long and emotional speech about clothes that I save even though they are beyond repair. What I will say is, removing these items from your closet is important for decluttering your space. You know the phrase “You don’t have to go home but you have to get out of here”, well the same logic applies. If you have clothes that are beyond repair, but hold sentimental value, I encourage you to put them in storage bins in a separate location. This way they are out of your closet, but the memories are not out of your life. You will still have access to them without creating clutter in your closet. Otherwise if the items do not hold sentimental value, you can repurpose the fabric or recycle with a retailer or third party program.
